Six Great Web Development Sites
The first web page went live on August 6, 1991. To say there’s been progress since then would be an understatement. In the 24 years that have followed (and Media Temple has been around for 16 of them!), websites have not only grow aesthetically but they also have also significantly improved in both functionality and user interaction. Here are six essential websites that not only helped web development evolve but might help you become a better web developer.
1: CSS-Tricks
Chris Coyier’s CSS-Tricks is a veritable treasure trove of web resources. Now in its eighth year, CSS-Tricks has evolved into more than just a CSS depot. Experts of all kinds (HTML, WordPress, Java, and even Pinterest) add valuable insights that can make any website that much better.
2: CodePen
Don’t have a CodePen account? Quit wasting time and log onto a searchable database of code snippets. Any piece of code dropped into CodePen’s code editor can be previewed instantly, allowing anyone to build, troubleshoot, test, and learn on the fly.
3: Six Revisions
Launched in 2008, Six Revisions does a fantastic job of taking a holistic look at web development. But this holistic approach isn’t thin or shallow, far from it. Instead, Six Revisions builds your toolbox with amazing icon packs and stylesheets to improve your development process.
4: WordPress Codex
The world’s largest CMS, thankfully, comes with an absolutely comprehensive online manual. A living (and growing) repository for WordPress information and documentation, the Codex will teach you everything from the absolute basics to writing plugins.
5: Smashing Magazine
Another long-standing site, the guys behind Smashing Magazine have created, essentially, the bible of developer content. Even a cursory scroll through their content categories (coding, design, mobile, graphics, UX design, and WordPress) reveals an incredible depth of resources available for anyone willing to learn something new.
6: Don’t Fear the Internet
For those of us who have a great idea but are absolutely mortified by creating a website, Don’t Fear the Internet is the site for you. The team of Jessica Hische and Russ Maschmeyer have created comprehensive video tutorials of essential web techniques. Making it through a full lesson set can give any beginner the know-how to build the site of their dreams.
