Embracing the Low-Code Revolution
The cloud is an integral part of the modern enterprise’s technology stack, prompting DevOps teams to find new ways to not only optimize their time but also maximize their organization’s investment in the cloud. Meeting that need for extreme efficiency, a new set of DevOps tools have slowly made their way into the enterprise toolkit, casually labelled as “Low-code.”
Traditionally, DevOps teams have been tasked to hand code custom software for each of their cloud projects. This meant allocating plenty of time and resources to scope out project size, research toolsets, and dedicate key team players to the project in order to ensure timely completion, all while assuming that both the development and operations teams are collaborating fully every step of the way. Low-code platforms, however, take direct aim at a persistent challenge for DevOps teams: They provide a visual tool that can eliminate the need for hand coding software that links the site or app to the requisite cloud infrastructure. This can appear to confront (or dare we say, disrupt) one of the main tenets of DevOps culture, namely the actual collaboration between development and operations teams, by eliminating some tasks entirely. But the benefits are instantly apparent. Less time is spent on infrastructure code as a vast chunk of the manual tasks become automated. The reduction of manual (and possibly faulty) code provides a lower level of coding necessary to bring a site or app to production, thus speeding up production. If anything, a low code toolset can break down the last bastions of siloed developers, and in turn, promoting a DevOps culture that relies on collaboration and increased automation.
