Meet Media Temple: James Trego
If you’ve ever called in with questions about your hosting solution, there’s a good chance you talked to James Trego. A nine-year veteran of our customer support team, James’ guidance and presence on the floor has been invaluable for both customers and teammates alike.
1: What do you like the most about what you do?
I really enjoy the interactions I have with our customers. They are all interesting in their own way and very appreciative when getting help in a field they (most likely) know little about. My team leads and teammates are also a pleasure to deal with as well.
2: How different is Media Temple compared to any previous companies you worked at?
Before Media Temple, I was a part of a support team for a major telecommunications company. With over 200 agents and 900 customers in the queue, there was a lot of pressure and little appreciation. Needless to say, all the differences one experiences working in a tighter-knit team are most welcome!
3: What was the weirdest job you had?
I was an ad sales manager at a bicycle magazine. I had to convince bicycle companies to send us samples of bikes, helmets and various biking accessories. The product reviews were always a blast, but we also sponsored ride events which were always a lot of fun.
4: Outside of Media Temple, what do you do in your free time?
I spend a fair amount of time playing music with pals and in a blues group. I also enjoy taking hikes up in the San Gabriel mountains. It’s great to have a semi-wilderness so close to home. If I had a bigger garage I’d be working on my 1968 Chevrolet Malibu, but that project is going to have to wait until I get enough workspace.
5: What’s been your biggest accomplishment so far at Media Temple?
Surviving eight Christmas parties may not qualify (but certainly is noteworthy!). But really, setting up a self-managed VPS server with Apache, nginx and MariaDB for our team server contest was definitely a great experience.
6: How has Media Temple helped you pursue your passions?
The can-do attitude at Media Temple can be applied to every aspect of life. This persistence has helped me acquire new guitar gear, take some awesome road trips, help my daughter through school, and even keep her car running.
7: What’s your favorite book and movie?
The Lord of the Rings and Foundation trilogies. And, for some reason I don’t quite understand, the movie “Overboard”.
8: If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be?
Batman. He’s driving.
9: Which one of the five company values resonates the most with you? Why?
“LIVE PASSIONATELY”. There wouldn’t be much point to a life lived without passion, and the good things in life emerge from the passion put into what you do.
