(mt) Hosted Sites for Japan

Many people in Japan are struggling to pick up the pieces after the destruction wrought by the March 11th earthquake. Relief efforts have launched around the world and the web to help with the clean-up and (mt) Media Temple is proud to host a number of these websites. Along with working with the Red Cross to take collections at our South by Southwest event last week, we took to our Twitter stream recently to get to know (mt) users who have set up their own relief sites and pages.

The Earthquake
The 9.0 MW quake hit the Northeastern coast of Japan on March 11th, 2011 at 14:46 JST and subsequently triggered a deadly tsunami. It is the most powerful known earthquake ever to have hit Japan and one of the five most powerful earthquakes in documented history. Many are missing and hundreds of thousands are homeless. The World Bank has estimated damage between US$122 billion and $235 billion. Relief efforts have been immense, but every bit helps.

How You Can Help
In times like these, aid and support are appreciated no matter how small the gestures or where they come from.  If you would like to help, there are a number of groups you can contact.  A few options hosted by (mt) Media Temple and/or created by (mt) clients are listed below.

  • Japaneq.com:  Updates and information on the disaster and how to provide support or donations to larger foundations.  Created by Mikael Holm.
  • 2hj.org:  Second Harvest Japan is a food bank that collects safe-to-consume food from companies and individual donors, then distributes to those in need such as the Japan earthquake victims. Monetary donations also accepted.
  • Japanearthquakesupport.org: Created by Lance Rowland and managed by FirstGiving.com, all donations go directly to American National Red Cross.

Thank you to everyone who has given support!
