Customer Spotlight: Movember & Co.
Movember & Co. is both a local barber shop in Culver City, CA and the flagship barbershop of the men’s health global charity, the Movember Foundation. Both in practice and in principle, Movember & Co. is one of the many that the Movember Foundation keeps true to the soul and spirit of their mission towards men’s health.
When it came to designing your office and the barbershop, what sort of aesthetic were you pushing for?
Our operations manager, Alana Tozer, is behind the look of the office and the barbershop. We wanted something cool but not very modern. The exposed brick, reclaimed wood tables for desks and conference rooms, and the flea market furniture all contribute to the rustic look. We also wanted to retain the iconic imagery that comes with a barbershop, including the red, white, and blue stripe pole and deep leather chairs.
What sort of promotions do you do offline?
We give our campaign out to the community and let them come up with different plans. Our brand inspires a lot of really passionate people. One participant is having a golf tournament in Los Angeles, another is having a date auction in San Francisco, etc. It’s really fantastic to see the different creative ways to see people raise money for Movember.
Speaking of participating there’s a new way to get involved: The MOVE Initiative, where we try to get everyone to be physically active for the thirty days of November. That way, women can get involved with the Foundation as well .
Can you tell us more about the mission of Movember?
We want men to live happier, healthier, and longer lives. We are trying to help raise awareness about prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health, and physical activity. When it comes to men and their health, too many men don’t talk about it and don’t take action. That’s what the moustache is all about: starting the conversation about men’s health.
What’s your favorite part about the barbershop?
Our old office was on Abbott Kinney in Venice, CA, and had a barber chair in the corner, which was really emblematic of what we’re about. The barbershop is traditionally a place where men come together and talk about things they would not normally talk about. We wanted a place like that here in the Culver City community to keep sparking those conversations, and be a comfortable place for people to gather. When we first walked into our current building, we knew we had found the perfect spot!
If you could pick a dream partnership, what would it be?
I’d love to see the NFL take up the Movember initiative. It would be really cool to see them transition from the pink apparel in October to getting on board with Movember in November. Most Americans watch football on Sundays: Imagine seeing all these moustached faces out there!
If there’s one thing people should know about you, what would it be?
We’re a 501c3 charitable organization, and are here year round, always willing to talk about men’s health and help reduce the stigmas around men’s physical and mental health!
